The World Wide Web, smartphones, online shopping, online banking, WiFi, Google, digital cameras, text messaging, email and flat screen TV’s have been named as the top ten greatest things from the past 30 years a new survey out today has revealed. Â
The research conducted by the UK’s first budget hotel brand, Travelodge which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, surveyed 3,000 British adults to seek their views on the greatest things of the past 30 years.
Findings revealed that the smoking ban (18), Super Mario Brothers (12), Harry Potter (39), Margaret Thatcher (54), William and Kate’s wedding (56) and Take That (72) have been named among the greatest things of the past 30 years. Â
Key findings revealed that whilst technology dominates the top 100 listing of ‘30 years of Greatness’, in an era where Britons were hit by the credit crunch and a recession, budget operators also featured highly. With low cost supermarkets (25) airlines (30) and hotels (35) all considered great and demonstrating that we have become a nation of value conscious shoppers. Â
Other popular things from the past 30 years which have become firm favourites for women include: GHD straighteners (13), skinny jeans (36), the Wonderbra (44) and Spandex (52).
The research also revealed the triumphant 2012 Olympics was considered to be the biggest sporting event of the last three decades (20) followed by Andy Murray’s 2013 Wimbledon win (27), England’s 5-1 football win over Germany in 2001 (41) and Euro 96 (75).
A few sportspeople even got mentions within the top 100 list which included David Beckham (61), Usain Bolt (69), Roger Federer (73) and Alan Shearer (92).
Memorable TV shows from the last 30 years include: The Simpsons (63), Friends (64), EastEnders (77), Big Brother(88), The X Factor (87) and Sex and the City (90).
Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge Spokeswoman said: “The last 30 years has seen a huge shift in the way we live our lives with technology completely changing many things. The internet has certainly accelerated the growth of budget travel and made going away a key part of our modern lifestyle.
“Over the last 30 years, Travelodge, the UK’s first budget hotel chain, which today has over 500 UK sites, has made staying in a hotel accessible to everyone. Today over 17 million people annually stay in a Travelodge hotel either for work or for leisure.
The internet  has also influenced some of the other things that we consider to be great within the last 30 years, such as fibre optic broadband (15), online check-in (29), Spotify (74) and Netflix (76).
The top 100 listing also features several websites which have become essential to modern day life including: You Tube (19), price comparison sites (22), eBay (26) and Wikipedia (28).
Social media is also a popular choice with Facebook (32), Twitter (71), and Instagram (91) getting separate mentions.
Unsurprisingly, Apple also has several items in the list, including the iPad (23), iPhone (33), iPod (43) and iTunes (66).
Digital TV (16), DVD (17), Sky+ (24) and several games consoles such as the Playstation (58), X-Box (67), Nintendo Wii (70), Game Boy (82) and the classic Sega Megadrive (86) also make the list.
Whilst technology is a major feature of the past 30 years, the research also revealed that historical events like the Berlin Wall coming down and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee are also considered to be among the greatest things.
